Verses from Surat Maryam

Al Salam alaikum wa Rahmat Allah wa Barakatoh

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

{كهيعص}

Meaning:  Kaf-Ha-Ya-’Ain-Sad.

[These letters are one of the miracles of the Qur'an, and none but Allah (alone) knows their meanings.]

{ذكر رحمة ربك عبده زكريا}

(This is) a mention of the mercy of your Lord to His slave Zakariyya (Zechariah).

{إذ نادى ربه نداءً خفيًا}

When he called out to his Lord (Allah) a call in secret.

{قال رب إني وهن العظم مني واشتعل الرأس شيبًا ولم أكن بدعائك رب شقيًا}

He said:  "My Lord!  Indeed my bones have grown feeble, and grey hair has spread on my head, and I have never been unblest in my invocation to You, O my Lord!"

{وإني خفت الموالي من ورائي وكانت امرأتي عاقرًا فهب لي من لدنك وليًا}

"And verily, I fear my relatives after me, and my wife is barren.  So give me from Yourself an heir."

{يرثني ويرث من آل يعقوب واجعله رب رضيًا}

"Who shall inherit me, and inherit (also) the posterity of Ya'qub (Jacob) (inheritance of the religious knowledge and Prophet hood, not of wealth).  And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-Pleased!"

{يا زكريا إنا نبشرك بغلام اسمه يحيى لم نجعل له من قبل سميًا}

(Allah said:) "O Zakariyya (Zechariah)!  Verily, We give you the glad tidings of a son, whose name will be Yahya (John).  We have given that name to none before (him)."

{قال رب أنى يكون لي غلام وكانت امرأتي عاقرًا وقد بلغت من الكبر عتيًا}

He said:  "My Lord!  How can I have a son, when my wife if barren, and I have reached the extreme old age."

{قال كذلك قال ربك هو علي هين وقد خلقتك من قبل ولم تك شيئًا}

He said:  "So (it will be).  Your Lord says:  It is easy for Me.  Certainly I have created you before, when you had been nothing!"

{قال رب اجعل لي آية قال آيتك ألا تكلم الناس ثلاث ليال سويًا}

[Zakariyya (Zechariah)] said:  "My Lord!  Appoint for me a sign."  He said:  "Your sign is that you shall not speak to mankind for three nights, though having no bodily defect."
